About Us
Preachers for the Salvation of Souls
The Order of Preachers (Dominicans) was founded in 1216 by St. Dominic de Guzman. It is a Roman Catholic Religious Order, whose charism is to preach and teach to combat heresies in the Church for the salvation of souls. In 1996 the Province of St. Joseph the Worker, Nigeria and Ghana, came to be having being present in Nigeria, Africa since 1951 through the missionaries from the St Albert the Great Province, USA, and is part of an international religious family, spread across countries, comprising the Dominican Family of Friars, Nuns, Laity, Fraternities of Priests of St. Dominic, Apostolic Sisters and Secular Institutes.
Dominican friars were among the earliest missionaries in the 'New World' of the Americas during the sixteenth century. The provinces of St. Joseph the Worker, Nigeria and Ghana continue this missionary character of the Dominican Order 800 years later. The universal character of the Order's structure corresponds to its universal mission to preach the Gospel in all nations. Today, vocations are not as plentiful as they were in the past; many of our provinces lack the necessary manpower, and the church, through its bishops, is seeking assistants to help their respective archdioceses and dioceses provide for the sacramental life and needs of God's people. The Province of St. Joseph the Worker has answered the call of the UNIVERSAL Church in this regard.
Dominican Friars entities in Nigeria, Ghana and Zambia are known as the Province of St. Joseph the Worker. The Province comprises over 231 friars, consisting of one of the largest Provinces among three in the Order to date. Our friars engage in various ministries, including serving as pastors, lecturers, hospital chaplains, itinerant preachers, and campus ministers. Blessed with abundant vocations, we strive to live out our Dominican life and intellectual Thomistic traditions as we face the challenges of modern-day West Africa.
